Pros and Cons to Underfloor Heating

The majority of us would love to have the luxury of underfloor heating through out our homes. Imagine getting out of bed on cold winter mornings and stepping onto warm floors. Underfloor heating has been very popular in England and Europe for several years and is now just gaining popularity in the United States. However, underfloor heating is not new, in fact Frank Lloyd Wright also used radiant heating in many of the homes he built in the 1930s.

The prime reason so many people are falling back in love with underfloor radiant heating is the comfort it supplies. With radiant heating, there aren’t any hot or cold spots in a room, the temperatures are constant with only a 2 to 4 degree difference between the floor and ceiling.

Another reason is that underfloor heating does not require ducts or vents, so dust is not circulated through the house. This is very beneficial for allergy suffers. In addition, because there are not ducts or vents, the system is absolutely silent.

Possible the greatest benefit of underfloor heating is that it is energy efficient, saving homeowners on the average of 20 to 40% on their energy bills.

However, if you are retrofitting your home, the installation can be quite costly making it very difficult for the average homeowner to afford. Another
drawback with underfloor heating is that it takes considerably longer to feel the warmth when compared to traditional systems. It also will not cool down immediately. Another problem and possible the largest one concerns homeowners who also want to install beautiful hardwood floors. With underfloor heating, if the systems are not installed correctly, then there is a risk of the hardwood flooring cracking. Therefore, if you want hardwood floors and underfloor heating, then it may be best to hire a professional contractor to install both the heating system and your hardwood floors.

Even with the few drawbacks of underfloor heating has, thousands of people every year convert form traditional heating systems to underfloor heating. After all, it is a system that is affordable, comfortable, energy efficient, and clean, making it a great way to stay warm and cozy all winter.
